Mail Filtering Services (MailGuard)
Did you know that opening attachments or links in spam emails is the most common way of getting infected with a virus or ransomware? Most of us like to think we’re good enough at spotting a fake from the real deal when it comes to spam email, but scammers are getting much better at making their emails seem genuine, and this is where a mail filtering service comes in.
What is MailGuard Mail Filtering Service?
MailGuard is a highly effective and intelligent solution for email gateway protection. Not only does our spam mail filtering service provide complete end to end security, delivering reliable protection against new and evolving spam and virus methods, but it also helps to protect against data leakage and breaches of confidentiality. Something of pinnacle importance with new GDPR legislation coming into play in May 2018.
Mail filtering is quick to set up and manage and can be implemented across multiple business sites, which is why so many of our clients currently use it.
How does a mail filtering service work?
MailGuard protects a company’s computers from spam by stopping rogue emails getting through. The process examines emails using a variety of algorithms and looking at the sender amongst many other details to determine whether the email is legitimate. After extensively, but extremely quickly being scored on their likelihood to be spam, anything that scores over the limit is blocked by the filter.
MailGuard carries out examinations on:
- SPF records
An SPF record is a type of Domain Name Service (DNS) record that identifies which mail servers are permitted to send email on behalf of your domain. The purpose of an SPF record is to prevent spammers from sending messages with forged From addresses at your domain.
- RBL checks
RBL stands for Real time Blackhole List, which is a list of IP addresses whose owners refuse to stop the proliferation of spam. The RBL usually lists server IP addresses from ISPs whose customers are responsible for the Spam and from ISPs whose servers are hijacked for spam relay.
3. Razor checking
Razor is a spam filter that uses a continuously-updated centralized database of known Spam to decide whether or not incoming mail is spam.
4. Pyzor checking
Pyzor works by checking each incoming message and reducing it to a simple checksum, or digest. This is queried against an online database of messages that others have reported as being spam.

What our clients think of MailGuard
Barbara Kapoor of leading storage makers, George Utz says:
“Life every morning was hell. I’d come to work and face as many as 200 emails many of which contained highly offensive material. It was taking me ages to find the genuine messages and as I tried to delete the rubbish I’d often trash the good ones by mistake.
An inbox full of rubbish was a real drain on our time. Our own desktop email program wasn’t filtering them out and it was taking us around 2 hours every day to manually sort through. As soon as we switched over to MailGuard they all stopped! It’s excellent.”
